The open-air city car will be based upon the latest Fortwo hardtop, already available in Europe.

Smart has reportedly confirmed plans to unveil a new Fortwo Cabriolet at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The debut venue was announced this week at an event in Portland, Oregon, according to Autoblog.

Additional details are unclear, though the open-air city car will presumably be a close match to the latest Fortwo hardtop. The 2016 model was first revealed last year in Paris and is already available for customers in Europe.

The third-generation Fortwo brings a more spacious interior, improved safety features and a slightly wider track than the outgoing model. The front fascia has been restyled with a larger grille and bigger headlamps, while the US-market engine has been upgraded to a turbocharged 0.9-liter unit with 89 horsepower and 100 lb-ft of torque.

The new Fortwo hardtop will not be available in US showrooms until September, and the convertible variant is unlikely to arrive until next year. Smart is also working on a new EV, potentially arriving on the market as early as 2017, and a compact crossover is said to be under development.
