Set to launch in September, the next fortwo finally gains a true manual transmisison.

Daimler's smart brand will travel to next week's New York Motor Show to introduce the all-new 2016 smart fortwo.Developed jointly with partner Renault, the 2016 fortwo is essentially identical to the Euro-spec model that was shown last fall at the Paris Motor Show. It stretches 105.9 inches long, 65.3 inches wide and 61 inches tall, dimensions that make it roughly the same size as the outgoing model. The city car boasts an impressive 22.8-foot turning radius.

Buyers can choose from four trim levels called pure, passion, prime and proxy, respectively. All models come standard with LED daytime running lights, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, remote keyless entry, power windows, a CD player and the Crosswind Assist technology that is more commonly found on large Mercedes vans like the Sprinter. The list of standalone options includes heated seats, a seven-inch touch screen that runs smart's Media-System infotainment system and rear parking sensors, and two option packages are also offered.

Smart will launch the third-gen fortwo with a limited-edition model called edition #1. Exclusively offered during the 2016 model year, the fortwo edition #1 stands out thanks to a comprehensive list of upgrades that includes a two-tone orange and white paint job, 16-inch black alloy wheels, a slightly lowered suspension, a panoramic sunroof, stainless steel pedals and a 240-watt eight-speaker JBL sound system.

In the U.S., the fortwo is exclusively offered with a Renault-sourced turbocharged 0.9-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 89 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 100 lb-ft. of torque starting at 2,500 rpm. A five-speed manual transmission finally comes standard, and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic unit is available at an extra cost.

The 2016 smart fortwo is scheduled to land in showrooms across the nation next September. Pricing information and fuel economy figures will be announced closer to its on-sale date.

Smart has not yet decided if the slightly bigger forfour will be sold on our shores.
