Honda has announced plans to offer vehicles with highly autonomous SAE Level 4 capabilities by 2025.
The Level 4 Honda and Acura vehicles will be able to handle all driving tasks in most situations, except for certain poor weather conditions or 'unusual' driving environments.
Drivers will not be required to constantly pay attention to the road in a Level 4 vehicle. If the autonomous system encounters a situation beyond its abilities, the driver will be asked to take control. If the driver is distracted or asleep, the vehicle will bring itself to a stop on a hard shoulder or other safe location.
"We are striving to provide our customers with a sense of confidence and trust by offering automated driving that will keep vehicles away from any dangerous situation and that will not make people around the vehicle feel unsafe," says Honda CEO Takahiro Hachigo.
The company plans to offer highly automated freeway driving by 2020, fulfilling SAE Level 3 standards.
