The BMW M8 sounds like one mean grand tourer.Following its static debut a couple of days ago, BMW has treated petrol heads to a dynamic unveiling of its upcoming M8 sports coupe at the M Festival held at Germany's Nurburgring.
Unfortunately the M8 BMW brought to the M Festival was still concealed by camouflage, but the German automaker rolled out the future vehicle to eager onlookers under its own power, revealing the car's engine note. In a video posted to YouTube by cvdzijden, we can hear the M8 bark to life and then rev through the RPM band.
We still don't officially know what engine resides beneath the hood of the M8, but a 4.4L twin-turbocharged V8 seems like the best guess. That engine will be shared with the next-generation M5 sedan and should crank out around 600 horsepower.
Like the M5, the M8 is expected to employ an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. However, the M Division's all-wheel drive system should be capable of sending up to 100 percent of the power to the rear wheels, ensuring sporty dynamics.
BMW will campaign a racing version of the M8 at the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans, so we should see the road-going version before then. Circle this year's Frankfurt Motor Show as the most likely venue for an official debut.
