Ford is going to make an electric version of its Transit.

Ford will soon become the largest manufacturer of battery-electric medium-duty delivery vehicles in Europe thanks to a new partnership with Germany's Deutsche Post.

Ford announced this week that it is working with Deutsche Post subsidiary StreetScooter GmbH to create a new electric delivery truck based on the Ford Transit. The electric delivery truck will be used by Deutsche Post DHL Group.

Drivetrain details were not revealed, but Ford expects to begin production of the plug-in truck next month. By next year, there will be at least 2,500 units of the Transit EV making their delivery rounds.

"E-Mobility and innovative traffic solutions for urban areas are key focuses for us as we transform our business to meet future challenges," says Steven Armstrong, group vice president and president Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ford Motor Company. "As the leader in commercial vehicles in Europa, this partnership plays perfectly to our strengths and in StreetScooter and the Deutsche Post DHL Group we have a partner with enormous competence and a worldwide network."
