Adding CarPlay support also requires a dealer visit to upgrade the vehicle's USB hub.

Ford has announced its first over-the-air software update, delivering smartphone integration features to vehicles from the 2016 model year.

Owners only need to use a Wi-Fi network to enable Android Auto for vehicles with Sync 3. Apple CarPlay software can also be downloaded wirelessly, however a dealer visit is required for a necessary USB hub upgrade.

"Our SYNC 3 software platform was designed to be easy to update so we can get our customers the latest and greatest features, functionally and security enhancements," says Ford Connected Vehicle and Services director Don Butler.

The company has designed the system to be fully automated and require minimal interaction, automatically fetching and installing software revisions as updates become available. Downloads will even continue when the car is turned off after connecting to a Wi-Fi network.
